D.C. Hunger Solutions has been visiting D.C. Public and Public Charter Schools in the District to see how the students, faculty, and staff are implementing the Healthy Schools Act. This page showcases some of the healthy eating and active living initiatives local schools are developing. Please send us a photo and a short description and we will feature your story on the website.
- On May 29th, 2013 students at DC public and public charter schools participated in Strawberries and Greens Day n celebration of supporting local foods. Students tasted locally-grown strawberries and salad greens right from their cafeteria, while also learning about other fruits and vegetables that can be grown right in our own backyards.
- On Strawberries and Salad Greens Day, DC Central Kitchen served students at Neval Thomas Elementary and helped them learn about fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade and strawberry chips made with local strawberries.
- Students at Turner ES are learning that food can be both healthy and yummy. On Strawberry and Salad Greens Day, hosted by the DC Farm to School Network, students visited a local farm to learn where produce comes from.
- The students at Hyde eat cucumbers, spinach, and raisins from their tasty salad bar.
- This year Imagine Hope Lamond launched, “Losing Habits, Gaining Life.” Students attended monthly town hall meetings, visited our culinary center, participated in school fitness classes led by the PE teacher, and built their first vegetable garden.
- Students at Anne Beers Elementary School show off their outdoor classroom and the new picnic table funded by the WAY to A Healthier America Initiative.
- Phelps is recycling to help the environment.
- Students in grades 2-5 at Imagine Southeast re-plant and spruce on ‘Spruce Day.”
- To get kids moving at Hardy Middle School, students can spend 15 minutes of their 45 minute lunch period outside – playing tennis, tossing a football, or walking around the track.
- At Friendship PCS Woodbridge, students plant vegetables in their garden sponsored by the Walmart Foundation’s WAY to A Healthier America Initiative.
- Mr. Booker, Stuart Hobson’s Health and Physical Education Teacher, encourages and trains students to participate in the NCB-Capitol Hill Classic run each May that benefits schools.
- Chefs and servers at Kelly Miller Middle School provide vegetable taste tests, smoothie demonstrations, and mentoring services for students learn about healthy eating.
- Phelps grab-and-go cart helps students eat breakfast even when they are on the run.
- Students in Amidon-Bowen Garden Club plant trees and try Kale!
- To help kids learn about calories, ingredients, and nutritional content, students at DC Prep Edgewood Elementary vividly illustrate whether food is “Good for You” or “Not Good for You”.
